Vintage Classic Martin 61 Fly Fishing Reel Retro Tackle Etsy Fly
Location: downtown Bulverde, Texas. The 60 series Martin's use the same spool plates on all their reels. The capacity is huge. For backing, I would recommend heading straight to the 30-lb. braided dacron. Capacity is easily 75 yds of that plus a DT5, and more backing with a WF line. Top. OhioOutdoorsman.

The reels had virtually no replaceable parts (which is good because none are available). The Martin 61 (and other tuna cans) are a bit prettier. The Martins have more fans, so asking prices can be higher than deserved. The tuna cans also have a reputation for being easily damaged by drops and impacts. The clicker has an interesting ringing tone.

#1 I am going to have a new Martin 61 coming soon. I think it is probably a 5-7 weight, but I am not sure. Does anyone on here know? This is my first tuna can reel. It was very reasonably priced. The Model 61 was my first fly reel, back around 1970, and I fished it with a K-mart DT5 line. And actually those old green K-mart lines were really quite good, very supple.

Just getting back to fly fishing after a long hiatus. I inherited several of these Martin 61 reels from my father. Just wondering if anyone here uses them and what your thoughts are? I was going to mate one with a Fenwick Aetos and another with a WM Granger Aristocrat 7030. Both are 4wght rods.

Heck yeah man! Love the "tuna cans". They last forever. You're right, no drag in the way that modern reels have drags. It's not an adjustable disc drag like your newer reels will have, but rather, as thebassman pointed out, it's a click pawl system. A simple clicker engages. The "drag" is either on, or off. I have a Martin 61 on a 4wt cane rod.

The width of them is different between the 60 and 61. The 61 has more capacity and the 60 is RHW only. These reels will hold a lot of line. With a WF5F on a 60, one could spool nearly 100 yards of 20# dacron if not more. They will hold a lot of line and do not provide a drag, just an overrun clicker. Top.
